Choosing a Routine App for Your Child: What Actually Matters

The right app is the one that genuinely helps in your child’s day-to-day — and that you can trust with your child’s data. A high star rating alone tells you little. The seven questions below help you judge, in a few minutes, whether an app fits your family.
1. Where is your child’s data stored — and which laws protect it?
What to look for: Two things, not one. First, does the app say which country its servers are in, and whether your data is transferred to other countries? Second, which rules protect it — data-protection laws apply based on where you are, not where the servers sit (in the EU that’s the GDPR, in the UK the UK GDPR, elsewhere your local law), and they require a valid legal basis whenever data crosses a border. Keeping data in one region is the simplest way to avoid that transfer question, but it isn’t the only lawful path.
Why it matters: “Compliant” is easy to write. What tells you more is whether you can see where your child’s data lives, whether it leaves your region, and — if it does — on what basis.
2. Does it store diagnoses or health data?
What to look for: Does the app ask for a diagnosis like ADHD or autism — and does it store it permanently? Or does that information, if used at all, stay only during setup and never get saved?
Why it matters: A child’s health data is among the most sensitive there is. A medical application such as a prescribed digital therapeutic needs the diagnosis under strict safeguards — a routine app for everyday family life doesn’t. For this category, the most trustworthy answer is: never stored in the first place.
3. Privacy: evidence, not assertion
What to look for: Not just the sentence “we’re GDPR-compliant,” but what’s behind it — a readable privacy policy, a list of the third-party providers (processors) it uses, and a clear way to access or delete your data.
Why it matters: You can’t verify an assertion. You can verify evidence.
4. Ads and tracking — including the invisible kind
What to look for: No ads is good — but look one level deeper: are third-party tracking or analytics services loaded in the background? “No ads” doesn’t automatically mean “no tracking.”
Why it matters: With an app for your child, you want to know who else is reading along.
5. Does the approach fit a neurodivergent child?
What to look for: Is it about routines, structure, and a sense of “I can do this myself” — or mainly tasks in exchange for pocket money? And: is the app open about which methods it draws on — such as behavioural parent training — and where they come from?
Why it matters: A child who needs structure differently is rarely well served by a generic task tracker.
6. Where do the numbers come from — and is the app honest about its stage?
What to look for: Large star ratings with no clear origin say little. What’s more valuable is whether an app is honest about where it currently stands, and whether feedback comes from real, nameable families rather than anonymous numbers.
Why it matters: Numbers alone are hard to verify. Honesty about your own stage is a better trust signal than a flawless rating.
7. Language and law for your region
What to look for: Is the app fully in your language — not just half-translated? And do its legal texts follow the law where you live, rather than only another country’s rules?
Why it matters: An app that genuinely understands your everyday family life shows it in the details.

FAQ
How can I tell whether a routine or task app is safe for my child?
Safety is only part of the answer — just as important is whether the approach fits your child and genuinely helps day to day. On the safety side, there are a few things you can actually check. Data-protection laws protect your child’s data based on where you live, not where the servers are — in the EU that’s the GDPR, in the UK the UK GDPR, elsewhere your local law — so look at whether the app is transparent about where data is stored, whether it crosses borders, and (if so) on what legal basis. Then: whether it stores diagnosis or health data (ideally not at all), and whether its privacy claims are backed by a readable policy and a named list of the providers it uses. Ads and hidden third-party tracking are red flags.
Is "GDPR-compliant" enough?
No. That’s an assertion, not something you can verify. Check whether the app names its server location, provides a privacy policy and a list of its processors, and gives you a clear way to access or delete your data.
Should an app store my child’s diagnosis?
That depends on what kind of app it is. A medical application — such as a prescribed digital health application (in Germany, a “DiGA”) — may need the diagnosis for its function and is subject to strict regulatory safeguards for it. Routine and task apps for everyday family life, the category this guide is about, are different: they don’t need the diagnosis — and what an app doesn’t need for its function, it shouldn’t store permanently. Here the most trustworthy answer is: never stored in the first place.
What matters more — lots of features or the right approach?
The approach. For a neurodivergent child, what counts is whether it’s about routines, structure, and self-efficacy, and whether the app is open about the methods it draws on — not how many extra features an app has.
